Bio-based & Reusable Packaging

ROLL Packaging position on bio-based feedstock in plastic packaging (PPWR Article 8) and on reusable packaging (PPWR Article 11 and the harmonised standard EN 13429). The ROLL portfolio is engineered primarily for reuse, with bio-based feedstock options available on request.

Reusability

Reusable packaging under PPWR Article 11 and EN 13429

Article 11 of Regulation (EU) 2025/40 (PPWR) defines reusable packaging as packaging that has been conceived, designed and placed on the market to accomplish multiple trips or rotations within its lifetime, by being refilled or reused for the same purpose for which it was conceived.

The harmonised European standard EN 13429:2004 specifies the technical requirements for packaging to be classified as reusable, including the conditions of physical durability, ability to perform multiple use cycles in the supply chain, and feasibility of return logistics.

PPWR Art. 11 · ROLL Position

ROLL portfolio engineered for reuse

The ROLL portfolio is engineered primarily for reuse. Out of 92 product references in the current catalogue, 87 references are designed as reusable in accordance with the principles of EN 13429, with the objective of enabling multiple use cycles throughout the supply chain. The remaining 5 references are designed as one-way solutions for specific shipping applications, typically as wood-replacement wedges for the road transport of rolls and reels.

Design principles for reuse

The reusable products in the ROLL portfolio are designed in accordance with the principles of EN 13429 and PPWR Article 11, including:

  • Physical durability of the materials and components throughout multiple use cycles
  • Compatibility with industry-standard handling, storage and transport conditions
  • Ability to be reconditioned, cleaned or repaired where necessary to extend the service life
  • Compatibility with circular logistics, including return programmes between shipper and consignee

The reusability status of each product reference is declared as a structured attribute in the online catalogue, enabling buyers to filter the portfolio by reusability category.

One-way products

The KU10 family (5 product references) consists of plastic wedges designed for single-use applications, typically as a wood-replacement solution for the road transport of rolls and reels. These products are explicitly identified as one-way in the catalogue and in the product technical documentation, and are designed to optimise recyclability at end of life within the standard PP recycling stream.

Bio-based feedstock

Bio-based feedstock under PPWR Article 8

Article 8 of Regulation (EU) 2025/40 (PPWR) sets out the framework for the use of bio-based feedstock in plastic packaging placed on the EU market. The specific minimum targets and the harmonised methodology for calculating the bio-based content of plastic packaging are subject to the adoption of future implementing acts and delegated acts by the European Commission.

At the date of this publication, the implementing acts under PPWR Article 8 have not yet been adopted. ROLL will progressively align with the binding requirements once they are published and enter into force.

Bio-based options in the ROLL portfolio

The current ROLL portfolio is manufactured primarily from fossil-based polymers (HDPE, PP, LDPE) and from cellulosic materials (corrugated cardboard for the PC family). The position regarding bio-based feedstock varies by material category:

Portfolio breakdown by feedstock availability

Material category Families Bio-based feedstock SKU
Cardboard PC Available on request 23
Plastic (HDPE, PP, LDPE) LO · CV · RM · SO · RP · PP · PPH · RCV · RC · RCH · KU · FL · PL · SB · CO Not currently available 63
Steel HA · HABA Not applicable 6

Cardboard products

STICKO PAPER cradles and stackers (PC family) are manufactured from cellulosic feedstock, which is intrinsically bio-based by origin. Specific declarations regarding the bio-based content of the cardboard used, including the share of virgin versus recycled fibres, are available from the cardboard supplier upon customer request.

Plastic products

The plastic product families in the ROLL portfolio are currently manufactured from fossil-based virgin or recycled polymers. Bio-based plastic polymers compatible with the technical performance required for ROLL products (mechanical strength, load capacity, durability over multiple use cycles, food contact suitability where applicable) are not currently used in standard production. ROLL monitors the development of bio-based polymer technologies and will introduce bio-based plastic options where the technical and commercial conditions allow.

Steel products

The HA and HABA metal product families are manufactured from steel, a non-organic material for which the bio-based feedstock concept does not apply.

Designed for circular logistics

Reusability is the foundation of the ROLL approach to industrial packaging for rolls and reels. The 87 reusable references in the current portfolio are designed to deliver multiple use cycles, supporting circular logistics models such as ship-and-return programmes between shipper and consignee.

The transition towards bio-based feedstock in plastic packaging is a parallel development that ROLL follows as the EU regulatory framework and the bio-based polymer technologies evolve.
