Materials Identification
ROLL Packaging applies the material identification coding system established by Commission Decision 97/129/EC, which defines the standardised numbering and abbreviations for packaging materials placed on the EU market. The coding system is referenced under PPWR Article 6 on recyclability.
The identification coding system
Commission Decision 97/129/EC of 28 January 1997 establishes the identification system for packaging materials pursuant to European Parliament and Council Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and packaging waste. The system assigns each material category a numeric code and a standardised abbreviation, designed to be applied on the packaging itself (typically within the well-known recycling triangle symbol) to support consumer information, sorting at end of life and material recycling.
The same coding system is used by Regulation (EU) 2025/40 (PPWR) as the technical reference for the labelling and identification of packaging materials.
Identification codes applicable to ROLL products
The following eight codes from Commission Decision 97/129/EC cover the materials used or potentially used in the manufacturing of ROLL products. The current status indicates whether the material is in active production today or whether the code is included for completeness and future use.
| Code | Symbol | Material | Typical applications | ROLL status | Used in families |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | PETE | Polyethylene terephthalate | Bottles, transparent films, food containers | Not currently used | — |
| 2 | HDPE | High-density polyethylene | Roll pallets, industrial pallets, food-grade applications | Used |
LOCVRMSORPPP08PLSBKU04
|
| 4 | LDPE | Low-density polyethylene | Flexible films, foamed extensions, soft polymers | Used (secondary) | KU10-ST |
| 5 | PP | Polypropylene | Heavy-duty pallets, end plates, flanges, wedges | Used |
FLPPHPP69KU10RCRCV
|
| 20 | PAP | Corrugated cardboard | Cradle separators, multi-roll shipping packaging | Used | PC |
| 81 | C/PAP | Paper and cardboard combined with plastic | Laminated paper-plastic composites | Not currently used | — |
| 40 | FE | Steel | Reinforcement bars, metal rack stillages, hanging accessories | Used |
HAHABALO02RM02/03PP69
|
| 41 | ALU | Aluminium | Aluminium foil, light gauge metal coils (RECYCLO input material) | Not currently used | — |
Note: Aluminium (code 41) is not used as a material to manufacture ROLL products, but it is among the input materials processed by the ROLL × GAVO Meccanica RECYCLO core stripper machine, which separates aluminium foil from end-of-reel cores for clean single-stream recycling.
Mapping by ROLL product family
The following table shows the primary and secondary identification codes for each ROLL product family. Where a family contains a mixed composition (e.g. plastic body with steel reinforcement bars), both the primary and secondary codes are listed.
| Family | Product line | Primary code | Secondary code | SKU count |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LO | LOGISTO Roll Cradle Pallets | 2 HDPE | 40 FE (LO02 only) | 4 |
| CV | CONVERTO Pallet Transformers | 2 HDPE | — | 5 |
| CO | COMBO Saddle Transformers | — | — | 2 |
| SB | STABILO Wedge Kits | 2 HDPE | — | 2 |
| RP | Roll Pallets | 2 HDPE | — | 2 |
| RM | MODULO Roll Pallets | 2 HDPE | 40 FE (RM02/03) | 3 |
| SO | SOLIDO XL Roll Pallets | 2 HDPE | — | 2 |
| PP | Heavy-Duty Plastic Pallets | 2 HDPE / 5 PP | 40 FE (PP69) | 3 |
| PPH | Hygienic Plastic Pallets | 5 PP | — | 2 |
| RC | COMBO Roll Pallets | 5 PP (frame only) | — | 3 |
| RCH | Compact Roll Pallets | 5 PP (frame only) | — | 1 |
| RCV | Rack-Compatible Roll Pallets | 5 PP | 2 HDPE | 6 |
| HA | HANGO Metal Rack Stillages | 40 FE | — | 4 |
| HABA | Reinforcement Bars | 40 FE | — | 2 |
| KU | KUNEO Wedges & Chocks | 2 HDPE (KU04) / 5 PP (KU10) | 4 LDPE (KU10-ST) | 7 |
| FL | FLANGE End Plates | 5 PP | — | 19 |
| PL | Plastic Plugs | 2 HDPE | — | 2 |
| PC | STICKO PAPER Cradles | 20 PAP | — | 22 |
Note on Combo composites (CO, RC frame + polyurea-coated EPS saddle): Combo products are composite materials (polyurea-coated expanded polystyrene) that do not fall within a single identification code under Commission Decision 97/129/EC and are not recoverable by standard material recycling. The structural frame of RC and RCH products, where present, is made of PP (code 5).
