Ozone-Depleting Substances
ROLL Packaging declares no intentional use of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) in its manufacturing process or in the raw materials supplied by its upstream partners, in accordance with the Montreal Protocol and Regulation (EU) 2024/590.
The international and EU framework on ODS
The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, signed in 1987 under the Vienna Convention, is the international treaty that progressively phases out the production and consumption of substances responsible for the depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer. The protocol has been universally ratified and is widely considered the most successful environmental treaty to date.
Within the European Union, the Montreal Protocol is implemented through Regulation (EU) 2024/590 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 7 February 2024 on substances that deplete the ozone layer, which has applied since 11 March 2024 and has repealed Regulation (EC) No 1005/2009. The regulation restricts the production, import, export, placing on the market, use and emissions of controlled substances listed in its Annex I, including chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), halons, methyl bromide, hydrobromofluorocarbons (HBFCs) and bromochloromethane.
ROLL Packaging position
ROLL declares that none of the controlled substances listed in Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2024/590 are intentionally used in:
- The manufacturing process of ROLL products at the ROLL production sites
- The raw materials supplied to ROLL by its upstream suppliers (polymers, paper, steel, additives)
- The auxiliary materials used in production (cleaning agents, mould release agents, processing aids)
This declaration is based on the technical specifications and compliance documentation provided by ROLL's raw material suppliers, who are themselves responsible for compliance with the applicable EU and international obligations.
Manufacturing process by product family
The ROLL portfolio is manufactured through three distinct production processes, none of which uses ozone-depleting substances:
Plastic injection moulding
HDPE, PP and LDPE polymers processed through injection moulding. No CFC, HCFC or HBFC blowing agents are used. Where polymer foams are present (Combo composite products), the expanded polystyrene used by the upstream supplier is manufactured with non-ODS blowing agents in accordance with the current EU regulation.
Cardboard converting
Mechanical converting of corrugated cardboard into STICKO PAPER cradles and stackers. The process is fully mechanical (cutting, slotting, gluing) and does not involve solvents or process aids classified as ozone-depleting substances.
Steel manufacturing
Cutting, welding, bending and surface finishing of steel for metal rack stillages and reinforcement bars. The process does not involve refrigerants, solvents or auxiliary chemicals classified as ozone-depleting substances under Regulation (EU) 2024/590.
Substances in packaging are also addressed under PPWR Article 5. The PPWR compliance page covers the broader framework of restricted substances in packaging materials.
